Carbonates Flashcards
What are three main sources?
Chalk
Marble
Limestone
How is quicklime manufactured?
Thermal decomposition
What is thermal decomposition equation of quicklime?
CaCO3 + heat ⇌ CaO + CO2
How is quicklime manufactured?
made in rotary kiln: air blows CO2 out before they combine again
What is the limestone cycle?
- Limestone (CaCO3) + heat
- Calcium oxide (CaO) + add water
- Calcium Hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) + dissolve in water
- Calcium hydroxide solution (limewater) (Ca(OH)2) + bubble carbon dioxide into limewater
What is the equation for the addition of water to calcium oxide?
CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2
What are the three uses of quicklime?
Making steel from iron
To neutralise acidity in soil
Drying agent in industry
What are the uses of slaked lime and lime?
Neutralise acidity in soil, and in lakes affected by acid rain,
Neutralising acidic industrial waste products, e.g. flue gas desulfurization
What is used in the manufacture of cement?
calcium carbonate
Describe the manufacture of cement (3)
- In this, limestone/chalk is mixed with clay and heated in a rotary kiln.
- Substance in mixture react producing cement (which is a mixture of calcium aluminate and calcium silicate).
- Made into powder, when used - sprayed with water to make particles hold tight
