Carbon Footprint Flashcards
What is meant by the term carbon footprint ?
Total amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted over the full life cycle of product, service or event
How can we reduce our carbon dioxide emissions ?
Insulation our homes or turning down the heating we can reduce carbon dioxide emissions due to heating being generated by burning fossil fuels
Using public transport such as buses and trains as they produce less carbon dioxide per passenger
What is a lot of carbon dioxide produced by ?
Generating electricity by burning fossil fuels
How can we reduce carbon emissions that are produced by generating electricity by burning fossil fuels ?
Use renewable energy sources such as winder power
Use energy saving lightbulbs
Turn appliances of at the plug
What is the problem with these methods of reducing our carbon emissions ?
The solutions are expensive and people are reluctant to pay and can be inconvenient
How can reduce methane emissions ?
The biggest source is agriculture
- therefore if people ate less beef and dairy products
Landfill
What is the problem with the suggested methods of reducing methane emissions ?
People enjoy eating meat and are unlikely to change their diet
How can we reduce methane emissions produced by landfill ?
Trapping the methane and burning it to produce electricity which is a good idea as methane is much more powerful green house gas than carbon dioxide
What is the issue with the suggestions of reducing methane emissions with landfill ?
Trapping and burning methane costs money
