Carbon Compounds and Functional Groups Flashcards
What makes carbon so important?
-Four valence electrons, tetravalent, forms strong stable covalent bonds, readily forms multiple bonds and long chains
What is the Octet Rule?
-The number of covalent bonds an element forms is determined by the number of electrons in its outer shell
What is the functional group interconversion?
-The process that allow a synthetic chemist to transform a functional group into another to change molecular properties

What is the infix for a triple C-C bond?
-yn-
What is the infix for a double C-C bond?
-en-
What is the infix for a single C-C bond?
-an-
What is the first step of IUPAC nomenclature?
-Identify longest continuous carbon chain- this becomes the parent
What is the second step of IUPAC nomenclature?
-Identify unsaturation (any double or triple bonds)- becomes the infix
What is the third step of IUPAC nomenclature?
-Number each carbon in the principle chain so that the substituent has the smallest possible number
What is the fourth step of IUPAC nomenclature?
-Name the substituent to become the prefix to the principle chain and decide the suffix
Where are the substituents if the benzene ring is ortho?
-1,2
Where are the substituents if the benzene ring is meta?
-1,3
Where are the substituents if the benzene ring is para?
-1,4
