Carbon Chemistry Flashcards
What is carbon?
the basis / backbone of all organic chemistry
How many protons and electrons does carob have?
6 so its structure will be 1s2, 2s2, 2p2
How many orbitals are available for electron pairing?
2
What happens when carbon starts bonding, or is bonded?
it goes through hybridisation
a s electron from 2s is given / promoted to the p orbital (sp hybridisation)
carbon forms a new structure = 1s2 2s1 2p3
carbon makes 4 covalent bonds
What kind of bonds can carbon form?
single covalent bonds - known as sigma bonds
also double bonds and triple bonds
Where can sigma bonds form between?
s-s orbitals - two circles
s-p orbitals - circle and 8
p-p orbitals - 9 and 9
Are sigma bonds strong or weak and why?
very strong
orbitals overlap directly between two nuclei
have free rotains - actoms spin
