Q

What happens when carbon starts bonding, or is bonded?

A

it goes through hybridisation

a s electron from 2s is given / promoted to the p orbital (sp hybridisation)

carbon forms a new structure = 1s2 2s1 2p3

carbon makes 4 covalent bonds

Q

Where can sigma bonds form between?

A

s-s orbitals - two circles

Q

Are sigma bonds strong or weak and why?

A

very strong

orbitals overlap directly between two nuclei

have free rotains - actoms spin
