Carbon Auditing Flashcards
What is a carbon audit?
Techniques to determine GHG emissions from an organisation or process
Done to policy, social responsibility, brand value
What is carbon footprint?
A measure of total GHG emissions caused directly/indirectly by a person/organisation/product
How is carbon footprint measured?
Measured in terms of tCO2 equivalent for 100 year GHG potential
Steps for carbon audit
Steps:
1.) Proper method/standard (GHG protocol)
2.) Set clear boundaries, and which parts should be included and quantified.
3.) Collate the data accurately, kWh. Collect fuel consumption by fuel type. Clarify any gaps and assumptions.
4.) Calculate tCO2e
5.) Have a third party verify carbon audit.
6.) Verify that you have taken action to reduce emissions.
Benefits of reporting to internal audiences
Lower energy costs, shows commitment to employees, optimises process from identifying efficiency issues.
Benefits of reporting to external audiences
Brand image, can distinguish themselves, allows customers to make informed decisions.
