Carbon and Its Compounds Flashcards
Conductors of electricity?
Melting and Boiling Points?
Carbon compounds are bad conductors of electricity.
Have low melting and boiling points.
So it can be concluded that the forces of attraction between the molecules is not very strong.
As the compounds are largely poor conductors, it can be concluded that the bonding in the compounds does not give rise to any ions.
How is Carbon different from other elements?
Carbon is different from other elements as it can form up to almost infinite number of compounds
1)Tetravalency- Carbon is a tetravalent element. Its valency is 4. To attain noble gas configuration, it does not give or lose electrons. If it were to gain or lose electrons-
.) It could gain four electrons forming a C4- anion but it would be difficult for the nucleus with six protons to hold on to 10 electrons.
.) It could lose four electrons forming a C4+ cation but it would require a lot of energy to remove four electrons leaving behind a carbon caation with six protons in its nuclues holding on two just two electrons.
