Carbohydrates- intro + monosaccharides Flashcards
what is an isomer?
a molecule with same formula but different arrangement of atoms
what are the functions of carbohydrates?
- Source of energy- glucose is respired to release energy to produce ATP
- Store of energy - glycogen in humans starch in plants.
3.Structural components- cellulose, peptidoglycan, chitin - Combine with other molecules e.g glycoprotein in the golgi.
what chemical elements make up the biological molecule carbohydrate?
carbon
hydrogen
oxygen
what is the general formula of carbohydrates?
Cn(H2O)n
what is a monomer?
what is a polymer?
-a single subunit
-many subunits
what’s the difference between hexose and pentose monosaccharide?
-pentose: 5 carbons
-hexose: 6 carbons
which carbonates are sweet and soluble?
which are non sweet and insoluble?
-monosaccharides and disaccharides
-polysaccharides
what is one sugar molecule called?
monosaccharide
what are 3 examples of monosaccharides?
-glucose
-fructose
-galactose
how does alpha and beta glucose differ?
alpha glucose has an OH hydroxyl group below carbon 1 and a hydrogen above carbon 1.
This is reversed in beta glucose.
how do you draw an alpha glucose?
