Q

Three important disaccharides and their desriptions

A

Maltose - two glucose units, produced from starch break down, germination of seeds and the fermentation. Not common in food but occurs in barley.
Sucrose - fructose and glucose units, table sugar, refined from sugarcane, beets and is common in food.
Lactose - galactose and glucose combined, found in dairy products.

Q

What cells secrete insulin and after what event?

A

The beta cells of the pancreas after a meal or postprandial.

17
Q

What cells secrete glucagon?

A

Alpha cells of pancreas.

18
Q

Describe type 1 diabetes

A

Pancreatic beta cells don’t produce insulin. 5-10% of casses.

19
Q

Describe type 2 diabetes

A

cells resist insulin or there is not enough insulin produced.
