Carbohydrates Flashcards
What are the three main classes of carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides, Disaccharides, and Polysaccharides
Monosaccharides
Carbohydrates that cannot be hydrolyzed to simpler carbohydrates
Disaccharides
Carbohydrates that can be hydrolyzed into a two monosaccharide units
Polysaccharides
Carbohydrates that are polymeric sugars
Examples of Monosaccharides
Glucose, fructose, galactose, C6H12O6
Examples of Disaccharides
Sucrose, lactose, maltose, C12H22O11
Examples of Polysaccharides
Cellulose, starch, glycogen
Stereoisomers
things that have the same atoms but different shape
How to tell if it is a Ketose?
if the carbonal bond is in the middle
How to tell if it is Aldehyde?
if the carbonal bond is in the end
Carbonal group
C=O, C double bond O
Hydroxyl group
OH
Example of Aldose
Glucose
Example of Ketose
Fructose
How are mono,di,poly saccharides different?
Monosaccharides have 1 sugar. Disaccharides have 2 sugars. Polysaccharides have 3 or more sugars
