Carbohydrates Flashcards
what type of reaction occurs when two monosaccharides react to form a disaccharide?
condensation reaction
- a molecule of water is removed (from hydroxyl group on one sugar and a hydrogen on another)
what type of bond forms when two monosaccharides react to form a disaccharide?
glycosidic bond
when polysaccharides are broken down during digestion what type of reaction occurs?
Hydrolysis reaction
- a water molecule is added to break the glycosidic bond.
what is the difference between alpha glucose and beta glucose?
Alpha- the OH group is below the carbon
Beta- the OH group is above the carbon
What are the 3 examples of disaccharides and how they are formed?
Maltose = a-glucose + a-glucose
sucrose = glucose + fructose
lactose = glucose + galactose
