Carbohydrates Flashcards
What are carbohydrates, and why are they important?
Carbohydrates are sugars that provide energy for the body. They are important because they fuel our cells and help us function.
Name three examples of carbohydrates.
Glucose, sucrose, and starch are examples of carbohydrates.
What do carbohydrates do in our bodies?
Carbohydrates give us energy to do things like walk, talk, and think.
What are the three main types of carbohydrates?
The three main types are sugars, starches, and fibers.
What is glucose, and where is it found?
Glucose is a type of sugar found in fruits, honey, and our bloodstream.
What is the role of glucose in our bodies?
Glucose gives our cells energy to work properly.
What is a disaccharide?
A disaccharide is a sugar made of two smaller sugar molecules.
Can you name two examples of disaccharides?
Lactose (found in milk) and sucrose (table sugar) are examples of disaccharides.
What do polysaccharides do?
Polysaccharides store energy for later use and give plants structure.
Give an example of a polysaccharide.
Starch, found in potatoes, is a polysaccharide.
What is a lipid bilayer?
A lipid bilayer is a double layer of fat molecules that forms the membranes of cells.
What does a lipid bilayer do in cells?
It keeps the inside of the cell separate from the outside and lets some things in while keeping others out.
Name one function of the lipid bilayer.
It helps cells communicate with each other.
What are associated proteins in a lipid bilayer?
They are special proteins that help the cell perform specific tasks.
What does cholesterol do in a lipid bilayer?
Cholesterol helps keep the cell membrane stable.
