what is the function of carbohydrates?
act as an energy source, help control blood glucose and insulin metabolism
what are some sources of carbohydrates?
bread, beans, potatoes, popcorn
what would happen if you have too much carbohydrates?
weight gain, poor metabolic health
what would happen if you had too little carbohydrates?
low blood sugar levels β called βhypoglycaemiaβ, leaving you feeling weak and light headed
what does dietary fibre do?
helps to keep our digestive system healthy and helps to reduce constipation
what are some sources of diary fibre?
oats, beans, pulses, fruit and vegetables
what happens if you have too much dietary fibre?
bloating, gas, and constipation
what happens you have too little dietary fibre?
constipation, irritable bowel syndrome
what is a sugary carbohydrate?
simple carbohydrates because they are in the most basic form
what is a starchy carbohydrate?
made up of sugar molecules that are strung together in long, complex chains
where are starchy carbohydrates found?
Potatoes, bread, rice, pasta
where are simple carbohydrates found?
fruits, milk, and milk products
where are complex carbohydrates found?
peas, beans, whole grains, and vegetables
