Carbohydrates Flashcards
What are the 3 elements that make up a carbohydrate?
Carbon, oxygen, hydrogen
What are the 2 types of glucose?
Alpha and Beta
What is the difference between alpha and beta glucose?
Alpha has the hydroxyl at the bottom, while Beta has it at the top
What are the 3 disaccharides?
Maltose, Sucrose and Lactose
How is maltose formed?
2 glucose molecules
How is sucrose formed?
1 glucose and 1 fructose
How is lactose formed?
1 glucose and 1 galactose
What are 3 polysaccharides?
Starch, Glycogen and cellulose
What are the 2 parts of starch?
Amylose and amylopectin
What is the structure of amylose?
Alpha glucose, 1,4 glycosidic bonds, coiled, insoluble, in plants
What is the function of amylose?
Storage in plants
What is the structure of amylopectin?
Alpha glucose, 1,4 and 1,6 glycosidic bonds, branched, in plants
What is the function of amylopectin?
Storage in plants, more easily accessible than amylose
What is the structure of glycogen?
Alpha glucose, 1,4 and 1,6 glycosidic bonds, branched, insoluble, in mammals
What is the function of glycogen?
Provide mammals with energy
