What are the functions of Carbohydrates in the diet?
- Provide the body with the energy needed for physical activity and to maintain bodily functions
- Provide us with dietary fibre
- GIves us sugar

Monosaccharides, Disaccharides
Why would athletes want to eat more Monosaccharides?
Because these types of sugar can be absorbed quickly into the body and the energy can be quickly provided

- Non-free sugars are easier for the body to absorb and they are less harmful
What are polysaccharides?
THey are complex carbohydrates formed from hondreds of glucose molecules strung together
What do complex carbohydrates do for the body?
- They take longer for the body to digest so they provide a feeling of fullness for longer
- Helps avoid overeating/ obesity
Where does starch come from?
All starch comes from plant sources only

What happens if you consume too many Carbs
- You can gain weight, Have teeth decay
- Blood/ Heart problems
- Cancer, Type 2 diabetes
What happens if you eat too few Carbs?
- Body enters Ketosis
- Fatigue
