Carbohydrates Flashcards
What is a macromolecule?
Large biological molecule
Monomer
Simple molecule as a building block for synthesis of a polymer
Polymer
Giant molecule made from repeating subunits (monomers) joined together in a chain
What elements does carbohydrate contain?
Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
General formula of carbohydrate
Cx(H2O)y
Monosaccharides
Simple sugar
General formula of monosaccharides
(CH2O)n
Main type of monosaccharides
Trioses, pentoses, hexoses
Formula of hexoses
C6H12O6
2 main roles of monosaccharides
Source of energy in respiration and as building blocks for polymers
Disaccharides
Sugar molecule consisting of 2 monosaccharides joined by glycosidic bond
Maltose consists of:
2 alpha glucose molecules
Sucrose consists of:
Alpha glucose + fructose
Lactose consists of:
Beta glucose + galactose
Polysaccharide
Polymer formed by many monosaccharide subunits together joined by glycosidic bonds in condensation reaction
Examples of polysaccharide
Cellulose, starch and glycogen
2 forms of starch
Amylose and amylopectin
Structure of amylose
Long unbranching chains of 1,4 linked alpha glucose molecules in a helix shaped chain
Structure of amylopectin
Chains are shorter consisting of 1,4 linked alpha glucose. Branches are formed by 1,6 linkages.
Glycogen structure
alpha glucose molecules joined by 1,4 linkages and highly branched 1,6 glycosidic bonds more frequently. It is not coiled.
Cellulose structure
Polymer of beta glucose joined by 1,4 glycosidic bonds
