Q

What is End of Service Time Indicators? (EOSTI)

A

All department harnesses are equipped with two independent low-air notification systems. The Vibralert is a gentle tapping created within the regulator assembly that vibrates the SCBA mask. A secondary low-air indicator is in the form of the HUD air monitoring system, as described in the Mask-Mounted Regulator Assembly section of this manual. This indicator will activate in conjunction with the Vibralert system. These low air indicators activate when approximately 33% (1800 psi) of air pressure remains in the cylinder or if a malfunction occurs in the high-pressure reducer

What is the BASIC SPILL GUIDELINES FOR ENGINE COMPANY PERSONNEL:

A

— Fire Agency should conform to Storm Water Runoff Policy.
— Never wash a spill down a drain.
— Dike with dirt or sand.
— Use City Public Works or County Public Works for sand or absorbent. If the roads are
private, try to make contact with the property owner to obtain clean up supplies.
— If the spill is less than 20 gallons and is a basic hydrocarbon product such as gasoline
or oil, absorb with sand/absorbent and sweep to the side of the road.
— When responding to a flammable liquid spill, Incident Commanders must first consider
the health issues and then work on handling the fire problem. In some cases, fire
companies may be required to stay on scene until the fire potential has been abated.

LIQUID SPILL FIRES AND TANKER FIRES - LIQUID ESCAPING FROM CARGO TANK:

A

With fires involving large quantities of hydrocarbon products, depending on the location, it may
be more advantageous to take a defensive action and let the fire burn out or burn until the
resources are available to combat the incident. However, in any case, the following actions
are recommended if a fire attack is chosen.
— Halt responding apparatus uphill of incident. Place foam lines into service to control the
spill fire, (EOM 507.01). DO NOT USE WATER UNLESS IT IS TO PERFORM A
RESCUE OR UNLESS YOU CAN FLUSH THE FIRE INTO AN ISOLATED AREA.
— Enough foam should be available to operate for at least 10 minutes of solid foam
application on a hydrocarbon spill fire. This will necessitate a mutual aid request for
foam.
— Make the initial attack from the sides of the tank.
— Enough foam concentrate should be on scene before attempting to fight a liquid spill fire
from a gasoline tank truck. Remember, these trucks may contain up to 9,000 gallons of
fuel. Extinguishment should not be started unless the resources are on scene.
