Capitalization Rule #3
Capitalize words that show family relationship if used as a name, but not if preceded by a possessive pronoun.
Ex. 1: I asked Dad and Uncle Bullet to teach me to play soccer.
Ex. 2: I asked my dad and my uncle to teach me to play soccer.
Capitalization Rule #4
Capitalize the first word and all important words in titles of books, poems, stories, films, works of art, and magazines.
Ex. 1: We memorized the poem, “If We Must Die.”
Ex. 2: We watched the movie Guardians of the Galaxy.
Ex. 3: The Boxer is a sculpture by Richmond Barthes.
Capitalization Rule #5
Capitalize months of the year, days of the week, A. M. and P. M., B.C., and A.D. Do not capitalize seasons unless part of a title. (A.M. and P.M. can be uppercase or lowercase)
Ex. 1: I was born on Saturday, October 29, at 2:15 P.M.
Ex. 2: Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 B.C.
Ex. 3: We have a parade in the fall.
Ex. 4: The Fall Festival was a success.
Capitalization Rule #6
Capitalize compass directions when referring to regions of the country or world, but not when used as directions.
Ex. 1: He lived in the Far East for many years.
Ex. 2: The South has produced many great writers.
Ex. 3: He was driving south on I-95.
Capitalization Rule #7
Capitalize titles of persons when they precede a name or when used in place of a name: Dr., Mr., Mrs., Senator, President, Captain, etc.
Ex. 1: I see Dr. Watson and Mr. and Mrs. Kwame Nkrumah.
Ex. 2: Hello, Captain! BUT Is there a captain on the ship?
Ex. 3: The President was shot in Ford’s Theater. BUT Tyanna is the president of our club.
Capitalization Rule #8
Capitalize the salutation and closing of letter.
Ex. 1: Dear Dustyn,
Ex. 2: Sincerely, Yours truly,
Capitalization Rule #9
Capitalize the first word of a direct quote.
Ex. Tyanna said, “You’re terrific.”
Capitalization Rule #10
Capitalize proper nouns and adjectives.
Ex. 1: Queen Tiye, Mrs. Garvey, Mary
Ex. 2: African American literature OR Victorian literature
