CAPGEN Flashcards
Rules for Designated Mountainous Areas
*Zones 1 and 5 to be operated at minimum of 2000ft above highest obstacle within 5nm
*Zones 2,3 and 4 to be operated at 1500ft above highest obstacle within 5nm
*On designated Airways and Air Routes operation at MEA/MOCA is allowed except in winter where 1000ft above is required
CAUTION: in winter, cold air and mountain wave effect might cause altimeter to overread up to 3000ft.
Aerodrome Operating Restriction - Visibility

-Pilot Vis
Aerodrome Operating Restrictions - Visibility
(Without Control Tower)
*Arrivals:
-RVR

-Pilot Visibility
*Departures
-Ground Visibility (METAR)
-RVR
-Pilot Visibility
RVOP and LVOP
For 1200 RVR allowed take off, 1000 RVR required for start.
For 600 RVR allowed, 600 RVR required for start.
IFR TakeOffs
Take off vis with hierarchy defined as:
1- Reported RVR of the runway (unless RVR fluctuating above and below the minimum or less than that for a Localized phenomena).
2- Reported Ground Vis (if RVR unavailable or fluctuating above and below the minimum or less than minimum if the ground vis is above minimum).
3- When no RVR or METAR is available vis of the runway to be determined by PIC
*In Northway we need 1/2SM vis for IFR TakeOffs
Departure obstacle clearance is based on which premise?
1- Cross at least 35 Feet above the end of the Runway
2- Climb on RWY Heading to 400ft AAE before turning
3- Maintain a climb gradient of at least 200ft per NM to minimum altitude for en route operation.
Approach is Banned when:
*The RVR values for the RWY in use are below the following minima:
Non precision, APV or CAT I
-RVR A only 1200
-RVR A and B 1200 and 600
-RVR B only 1200
Minimum RVR CAT II
RVR A and B 1200/600
Exceptions for Approach Ban
1- When below mínima RVR is received after the FAF, or if there is no FAF, after intercepting the Final Approach Course.
2- PIC informed ATC that this is a training flight and PIC will shoot a missed approach above DA or MDA
3- RVR varying between lesser and greater than Minimum RVR
4- RVR less than minimum but METAR above 1/4SM
5- PIC conducting approach to CAT III minima
Accepted Visual References
*RWY or RWY markings
*RWY threshold or threshold markings
*TDZ or TDZ Markings
*Approach Lights
*Approach Slope Indicator System (PAPI)
*RWY Identification Lights
*Threshold and RWY end lights
*Parallel RWY Edge Lights
*RWY centre lights
Altimeter Setting Requirements
*Valid for 90 minutes CAUTION after 60 mins (if pressure falling rapidly compensate with Altimeter Seeing: 0.01 inches = 10ft)
*Altimeter must be +/- 50ft within runway elevation (test at threshold on departure)
Use of Straight in Minima
Predicated upon Pilot having Wind strength and direction and runway condition.
This can be obtained by:
*Aereal Inspection
*Contacting UNICOM at destination
*Pre-Flight telephone call to destination to arrange necessary info when required to land
*NOTAM issued by operator
*Other means available such as message relay from preceding aircraft at destination.
Alternate Aerodrome Weather minima Requirements
*Predicted satellite outages have been taken into account and PIC verifies RAIM and WAAS integrity expected to be available at ETA
*GPS TSO C129/C129a avionics periodically during flight and at least once before mid flight PIC verifies RAIM is expected to be available at dest and alternate
*Satellite-Based approaches both dest and alternate separated by minimum 75 NM Nunavut and north of 56deg north in Quebec and Labrador or 100NM when both located elsewhere in Canada
*For RNP approaches, no credit might be taken for LPV or LP
*Credit may be taken for LNAV/VNAV if Aircraft is certified for Barometric LNAV/VNAV
Alternate weather minima Requirements
*Two or More Usable Precision Approaches = 400-1 or 200-1/2
*One precision approach available 600-2 or 300-1
*Non precision Only Available 800-2 or 300-1
*No IFR approach available No lower than 500ft above minimum IFR altitude that will permit VFR approach.
Sliding Scale for alternate minima
*600-2 can slide to 700-1/2 or 800/1
*800-2 can slide to 900-1/2 or 1000/1
Aerodrome advisory forecast or GFA
*Advisory require 500 above lowest usable HAT/HAA and VIS not less than 3SM
*GFA:
-No cloud lower than 1000AGL
-No CB
-Vis no less than 3SM
HIAL Inoperative
*HIAL Operational = DH 200-249 1/2 (RVR 26)
*HIAL Inoperative = DH 250 1 (RVR 50)
Satellite based Approaches in both destination and alternate requirements
*Predicted satellites outages taken into account PIC verifies RAIM and WAAS integrity expected to be available at ETAs
* GPS TSO C129/C129a RAIM to be checked at least once before mid point of flight and be serviceable for ETA at destination
*If satellite based approach planned both destination and alternate 75nm separation required in Nunavut or North 56deg latitude or 100nm anywhere else in Canada
Satellite based approaches in alternate Restrictions
*No credit may be taken for LPV or LP minima
*Credit may be taken for LNAV/VNAV lines of of minima when aircraft is Certified for Barometric LNAV/VNAV
*Credit may be taken for LNAV minima
Aerodrome may qualify as alternate if served with GFA weather provided that
*No cloud lower than 1000ft
*No CB
*3SM visibility or more
Aerodrome forecasts TAF containing BECMG, TEMPO, or PROB may be used as alternate provided that
*Where conditions are supposed to improve, BECMG period has to be considered as the END of the time period and cannot be below published alternate minima for that aerodrome
*Where conditions are forecast to deteriorate, BECMG period to be considered applicable as of the start of the time period, and cannot be below the published alternate minima for that aerodrome
*TEMPO shall not be below the published alternate minima for that aerodrome
*PROB shall not be below landing minima for that aerodrome
