Peterson and Peterson (1959)

A

Duration of info in STM with interference

  • 24 pp and 8 trials
  • in each trial, each pp given comsonant triagram and 3 digit number
  • asked to count down from 3 digit numbers for 3, 6 , 9, 12, 15, or 18 secs

Findings- after 3 secs, 90% recall
after 28 secs, 2% recall
Duration of STM IS 18-30 secs
18 secs with interference

A

Duration of LTM- Real life application

  • 400 people 17- 74 yrs
  • memory of classmates after 15 and 48 yrs
  • photo recognition
  • 50 photos
  • after 15 yrs of gradually = 90% accurate, after 48 yrs = 70%
  • with free recall (no photos)
    ^ - after 15 yrs= 60% recall, after 48yrs = 30% recall
