Capacitors Flashcards
Capacitor
A component that stores energy by separating charges into two electrical conductors with an insulator between them
Capacitance
The quantity of charge which can be stored per unit potential difference across the plates
Once a capacitor is fully charged
No more charge will flow in the circuit since the electrons on the negatively charged plate will repel further electrons away
Capacitors in series
1/total capacitance = 1/sum of individual capacitors
Capacitors in parallel
Total capacitance = sum of individual capacitors
Area under a voltage - charge graph
The work done as WD = 1/2 * Q * V
In exponential decay
The quantity decreases at a rate that is proportional to the magnitude of the quantity at that time. X = x.e^-kt
The time constant
The time taken for the charge remaining on a capacitor to decrease to 1/e, 37% of its original value.
