How does a microphone based on capacitance work?

A

Sound waves change the capacitance of the capacitor inside the microphone thereby producing an electrical signal.

How are capacitors constructed?

A

Capacitors are constructed by separating two sheets of conductor, which is usually metallic, by a thin layer of insulating material. Capacitors can be parallel plate or rolled.

Q

Why does current appear to flow through the capacitor in the beginning?

A

One plate accumulates a net negative charge that produces an electric field in the dielectric. This electric field forces electrons to leave the other plate at the same rate that they acculate on the other plate. As charge builds up, voltage appears across the capacitor.
