Cantilever Beams Flashcards
What is a cantilever beam?
It’s a beam with a fixed end and a free end, the free end would have the load on its side
2 examples of a cantilever beam
Lamp post
Crane
What is a simply supported beam?
A beam with a fixed end and a moveable end
Give an example of a simply supported beam
Bridge
What is a composit/overhanging beam?
A simply supported beam with a portion of the beam overhanging the moveable part
How do we show if the beam is fixed?
It will have a triangle and it could have dashes next to the triangle so signify that it is connected to something unmoveable
How do we show if the beam is moveable?
There will be a triangle under next to the beam with circles underneath the triangle
What is the beams equilibrium?
The part of the beam where it experiences no force
What force is called when it is pulled apart?
Tensive force / tension
What force is called when it is being pushed together?
Compressive force / compression
Which force would snap first?
Tension or compression?
Tension
What are ties?
Ties are cables that help hold a beam in place with the cable in tension force
What are struts?
Struts are cables that help hold the beam in place while being in compression
