Canopy Skills Flashcards
Describe the term square, stable, steerable
Square: Shape, fully inflated, well defined edges
Stable: floatable, The canopy should be overhead flying towards the horizon
Steerable: Function, control check
Why is it important to always look before we turn the parachute and where should we look?
To ensure your airspace is clear before initiating a turn
Define holding vs. running
Holding: Flying into the wind slowing your ground speed
Running: The wind on your back increasing your ground speed
What is PLR?
Parachute landing roll. Designed to absorb and disperse the energy of landing without hurting you.
Inn order, what are your landing priorities?
- Land with your wing level and flying straight
- Land in the middle of a large open clean area
- Flare (at least half way)
- Prepare for PLR
Where should you be looking during your flare?
Approach: 30-45 degrees
Finish: 15-30 degrees
What is the best way to quickly change your heading under canopy while conserving altitude?
Brake turns
Define your holding area?
an area upwind of your landing area for your canopy exercise
How can wind change your glide path?
crosswind (wind hitting your side to some degree) will off set your flight path
While under who has the right of way?
Lower parachuters have the right away
Where do you find turbulence?
Expect turbulence down wind of any obstacle at up to 10-20 times its height
How does wing loading affect your canopy flight?
Parachute with higher wing loads: fly forward faster, have a faster decent rate and turn quicker
Parachute with lighter wing loadings: fly forward more slowly
What is max avoidance turn?
Turns great for practicing avoiding other canopies
How high should you start your flare?
above 1500
