What should be in the intro for cannulation consent?
A
Small plastic tube that will sit in one of your veins and allow us to give fluids and medication to you
maybe uncomfortable putting it in but once its there no pain at all

What equipment do you need for a cannula?
A
- cannula
- cannula dressing
- extension set
- alcohol swab
- gauze
- dressings
- tourniquet
- gloves
- apron
- pre-filled saline flush
- field

How do you insert a cannula?
A
- Prepare saline flush - prime extension set
- Apply tourniquet and identify appropriate vein - ideally it shoudl eb straight
- clean area with alcohol wipe - concentric circles motion
- open cannula and ensure working parts move easily
- remove cap and place cannula upright
- remove needle sheath, bevel pointing upwards
- warn patient of a sharp scratch
- insert needle at 10-30 degrees
- advance until/observe flashback is seen
- Then retract needle slightly and advance cannula into vein
- once cannula is fully inserted, remove tourniquet
- place gauze below cannula to prevent blood spillage, remove needle completely
- replace cap quickly
- Dispose of sharps in an appropriate sharps bin
- secure cannula - use clear dressing to allow monitoring for early signs of infection
- prepare cannula flush with 0.9% normal saline- checking to ensure the flush is the correct solution with a suitable expiry date
- remove any air bubbles
- open cannula cap and flush the cannula
- checking for any local swelling around the cannula site; check if the patient is feeling any discomfort; replace cap;
- date cannula
- dispose of clinical waste; clean dish etc; wash hands; thank patient
- complete appropriate documentation
