Cann: CSPs Female (Treatments) Flashcards
1
Q
Aim?
A
To investigate if cognitive skills programmes were effective in lowering in reconviction rates for a sample of female prisoners
2
Q
Sample?
A
- 180 female offenders who had started Enhanced Thinking Skills (ETS) or Reasoning+Rehabilitation (R+R) 1996-2000
- 540 offenders who did not take part
3
Q
Procedure?
A
- expected 2 year reconviction rates calculated for each women
- matched on whether they were high, medium or low risk of conviction
- actual reconviction rates calculated for 1 year+2 years after release
4
Q
Results?
A
- no significant difference between groups for expected reconviction rates
- no significant difference in ETS but women worsened when undergoing R+R
5
Q
Conclusion?
A
Cognitive skills training may not be an effective treatment strategy for female offenders
6
Q
Strengths?
A
- matched pairs= more control, so higher internal validity
- control group= higher internal v
- longitudinal= higher predictive v+internal reliability
- useful
- quantitative data= easier to compare+analyse
7
Q
Weaknesses?
A
- small experimental sample= lower external reliability
- much larger control= different averages, harder to compare
- secondary data
- programmes not continuous
8
Q
Background?
A
Argued that CSPs are androcentrically biased, women are more likely to offend due to situational factors e.g drug abuse, relationship problems, emotional factors
