What are 3-4 non pharm tips for canker sores?

A
  • discussion and avoidance triggers (spicy, hot foods, citrus, trauma)
  • prevention: vitamin C, reduce stress
  • symptomatic relief with tylenol only (nsaids worsen canker sores), or topical anesthetics (benzocaine)
  • continue brushing gently with soft toothbrush (soften in warm water)
  • saline rinse BID
  • discussion of triggers

When should a canker sore be fully healed by?

A

canker sores should not take longer than 14 weeks to heal. >14 days = chronic canker sore and requires referral.

what are 3-4 canker sore red flags?

A
  • immunocomporomised
  • diameter > 1 cm
  • duration > 15 days
  • > 5 ulcers
  • pain severe enough that pt is not eating.
  • multiple ulcers coalescing.
  • signs of infection
