Canine vaccine protocol Flashcards
What is rabies?
It is a fatal viral disease that attacks the CNS. It can be contracted by all warm blooded animals.
RVH Rabies protocol?
Dogs get first rabies shot at 12-16 weeks old and then second booster one year later. RVH recommends dogs get rabies undated every 2 years. The state of NJ allows 3 years.
What does DHP stand for?
Distemper, hepatitis, parvo
What is Distemper?
Distemper is a viral disease that is very contagious and causes an array of symptoms which include; upper respiratory problems, digestive tract, neurological problems, integumentary problems. Initial symptoms are fever, ocular and nasal discharge, anorexia, blindness. Can cause death if not treated.
What is hepatitis?
Hep is a viral infection that causes severe liver damage, seizure, coma, and death.
What is Parvo?
HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS! Attacks rapidly dividing cells such as immune system, lining of the intestines, and bone marrow. Usually affects puppies and adolescent dogs.
What are the symptoms of parvo?
Severe vomiting and severe diarrhea that lead to dehydration. This also suppresses puppies immune system which allows other infections to occur. Can cause death if not treated.
RVH vaccine protocol for DHP?
DHP vaccine is started in puppies 6-8 weeks old and then administered every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks old. Rebooster is given one year after last puppy series. It is every 3 years for life. If dog had parvo/distemper vaccine is given more frequently depending on titers.
What is bordetella?
Bacterial infection that effects the upper respiratory system. Common name is kennel cough. Can progress to pneumonia is young and old dogs.
What vaccine is bundled with intranasal bordetella?
Parainfluenza
What is the combonation Bordetella/Parainfluenza protocol?
Usually started at 12 weeks and given with second distemper shot. The intranasal vaccine is revaccinated every 6 months for life.
What is parainfluenza?
Viral disease that causes respiratory problems similar to bordetella. Can range from mild to severe URI and lower respiratory infections. Can cause pneumonia in puppies.
What is Lyme disease?
Bacterial infection (borrelia burgdorferi) transmitted through tick bites. Usually deer ticks. Causes arthritis, kidney disease, swelling, flu like symptoms, as well as damage to heart , liver, and nervous system.
RVH Lyme disease protocol?
Lyme vaccine is given at 20 weeks of age and is a series of 2 vaccines. They are given 3-4 weeks apart. Re-vaccination can vary. Usually 1 year for rest of life. If exposure rate is high owners can discuss more frequent revac with vet
What is always given with Lyme vaccine?
Benedryl.
Why benedry?
It decreases the likelihood of a reaction from the vaccine.
What is leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can infect all mammals. It causes liver/kidney failure and animals can die even if they receive treatment.
How is Leptospirosis transmitted?
Infection spreads from bodies of water infected with the urine of an animal that is infected. Bacteria can enter through cuts on the skin and quickly spreads to the bloodstream.
What are the symptoms of leptospirosis?
Symptoms include fever, limping, diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy.
RVH vaccine protocol for Leptospirosis
Similar to Lyme, vaccine is started at 20 weeks of age and reboostered 3-4 weeks later. Revaccination should be every year after. If dog has had lepto in the past titer tests can be done to see if dog can receive vaccine.
What is an exception for lyme and lepto vaccine?
Larger breed dogs can start these vaccines earlier if DVM agrees.
What is given before lepto vaccine?
benedryl
What is vaccine protocol for canine influenza vaccine?
Can be started at 12 weeks then next vaccine is given 3-4 weeks later. Revaccination is every year.
What vaccines can be given together?
1- Rabies, intranasal bordetella, CIV
2- DHP, Intra-bord, CIV
3- intranasal bord can go with all vaccines
Can lepto or lyme be given at the same time?
No, they are given seperate.
