Neonatal
0 - 2 weeks
They are altricial, they can’t eliminate without assistance, and handling/interacting with them during this period can lead to quicker development of the nervous system.
Transitional
Day 13 - 20
Their eyes begin to open at 13 days, ears shortly after, substantial increase in brain activity, and they are beginning to walk, move away from their nesting area, and can now eliminate on their own.
Primary Socialization
Day 20 - week 6
They learn specific behavior for communication, they will learn body postures, vocalization, bite inhibitors, and manners. Volhard puppy test is performed at day 42.
Secondary Socialization
Week 7 - 14
Their prior experiences will carry on to adulthood, the interaction should be shorter than 20 minutes, and making sure that there will be positive experiences.
Juvenile
3 - 6 months
Independent, exploratory behavior, and continued reinforced social behavior.
Adolescence
6 - 18 months
Their brain is fully developed, behaviors such as testing boundaries, and challenging members of the family.
Canine ality and SAFER are performed.
Mature Adult
18 - 48 months
They are breed dependent, consistency, socialization, and training should be evident in a well trained adult at this stage.
Volhard Puppy Test
To predict the puppies personality, its done at 42 days.
SAFER Test
to see for signs of aggression in dogs, its done at 6 months or older.
Canine-ality Test
to know their personality, its done at 6 months or older.
Canine Good Citizen Test
to know their manners, its done at 6 months or older
Fear Period 1
8 - 11 weeks
Fear period 2
6 - 14 months
Fear
a behavioral response to a known or understood threat.
Anxiety
is an emotional or behavioral response to an unknown or poorly defined threat
