Canine and feline dental terminology Flashcards
Name the surfaces that are shown on the tooth below:
- Coronal - toward the crown
- Apical - toward the root
Define the following anatomical terms within the teeth:
- Inter-proximal space
- Inter-proximal surface
- Space between two adjacent teeth
- Adjacent surfaces of two adjacent teeth
What is the difference between the mesial surface and the distal surface of the tooth?
- Mesial surface - inter proximal surface of the tooth nearest central incisor
- Distal surface - inter proximal surface fo tooth furtherest from central incisor
What is the vestibular aspect of the tooth?
Outside of the tooth nearest lips/cheek
What is the labial aspect of tooth?
Outer surface of canine and incisor closest to lips
What is the buccal aspect of the teeth?
- Outer surface of the molars/premolars
What is the lingual/palatal surface?
- Refers to the tongue side of the tooth
What is meant by Diphyodont dentition?
Refers to having 2 sets of teeth - deciduous/primary teeth are the first set of teeth that are shed → replaced by permanent teeth or secondary sets of teeth
What is meant by the term mixed dentition?
Combination of erupted deciduous and permanent teeth within an oral cavity
What are the adult and juvenile dental formulas?
What is meant by the term oligodontia?
Decreased number of teeth - more common in dogs than cats
What is the main problem that supernumerary teeth present?
- Result in crowding and misalignment of the teeth
Define the term concrescence:
Roots are adhered together - known as concrescence
How many tooth roots are present for each tooth in the mouth?
Name the following anatomical parts of the tooth that is shown below:
- Crown
- Root
- Enamel
- Dentin
- Pulp chamber
- Cementoenamel junction (CEJ)
- Furcation
- Pulp canal
- Cementum
- Apex of the root
Name the condition that is demonstrated in the tooth below and state a potential cause:
Enamel hypoplasia:
- High fever
- Infections - canine distemper
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Disturbances in metabolism
- Systemic disorders
Name the condition that is shown in the tooth below:
Periapical lysis

Name the three parts of the gingiva that are shown below:
- Alveolar mucosa
- Mucogingival line
- Attached gingiva
What is quite thin when the tooth first erupts but then becomes stronger as the tooth matures?
Dentin
