Candida Flashcards
Is candidiasis an opportunistic infection?
Yes and No. It does require an immune defect but it does not require full-on immune suppression.
What is the main disease causing species of Candida?
Candida albicans ( ~1/2 of all candidemia)
What is the disease causing phase of Candida yeast?
The hyphal phase. Hyphae attach to ECM, secrete tissue degrading enzymes and invade surrounding tissue.
What does Thrush (oral candidiasis) suggest?
Severe immune compromise (HIV, chemotherapy).
What does Vaginal pruritis, pain, and a “thin-to-curd-like” discharge suggest?
Vulvo-vaginal candidiasis.
What do painful macro-nodular lesions throughout the body suggest?
disseminated candidiasis (hematogenous spread)
Tx considerations for C. glabrata and C. krusei?
They are less sensitive to fluconazole. Use echinocandin (micafungin)
Tx considerations for C. parapsilosis?
Less sensitive to echinocandin
Tx considerations for C. lusitaniae?
Resistant to Amphotericin B
What is C. tropicalis?
It is a more virulent form of Candida.
