Cancer treatment with Nuclear medicine Flashcards
What is Radioisotope Therapy?
Precision treatment : radioactive drug compound seeks and destroys cancer cells
What is used to treat Neuroendocrine tutors ?
lutetium-177 DOTATATE
What is used to treat Paraganglioma and Pheochromocytoma?
iodine-131
MIBG
What is used to treat Thyroid Cancer?
iodine-131
What is used to treat Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
yttrium-90 ibritumomab tiuxetan
What is used to treat Neuroblastoma?
iodine-131 MIBG
Benefits of Radioisotope Therapy?
***STOL = acronym
- Highly selective—kills cancer cells and spares healthy cells
- Can be tailored to the unique biologic characteristics of the patient and the molecular properties of the tumor
3.Virtually all performed as outpatient procedures
4.Side effect rates less than other treatments
What is used to treat Liver Cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma) and Liver-Dominant Metastatic Disease?
selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT)
with yttrium-90 microspheres
What is used to treat Bone Metastases from Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer?
radium-223 dichloride, samarium-153
lexidronam, and strontium-89 chloride
I have not included survival rates…but put in order of best to worst depending on type of Cancer
- Thyroid Ca: 90% cure rate
- Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: 75% effective
- Neuroblastoma: 57-75% response rates
- Neuroendocrine tutors: progression-free survival rate: 29 months
- Paraganglioma and Pheochromocytoma: survival 36 months
- Liver Cancer: 17-20 months survival rate
- Bone Metastases from Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer: between 3.6-month overall
survival benefit and 5.6-month benefit
