Cancer Biology Flashcards
What was Virchow’s law?
All cells come from cells
Omnis cellula e cellula
What are tumours?
Created by cells that have lost the ability to assemble and create tissue of normal form and function
OR
Disease of malfunctioning cells
What is hyperplasia?
The enlargement of an organ or tissue caused by an increase in the reproduction rate of cells
Often the initial stage of cancer
What is metaplasia?
Abnormal changes in the nature of a tissue
What is dysplasia?
The presence of cells of abnormal type, which may signify a stage preceding the development of cancer
What is neoplasia?
The presence of formation of new, abnormal growth
of tissue
What can we use to identify the origins of a tumour?
Histopathology
Why is histopathology important?
It allows us to predict common behaviours amongst diverse tumours
What is the first major risk factor in acquiring cancer?
Age
Is cancer increasing?
No but the cases increase because people are living to an older age
What kind of study shows that enviroment has a big role in cancer development?
Migration studies
Give examples of cancers where patients may have been more susceptible due to their genotype
Retinoblastoma
Wilms Tumour
Adenomatous polyposis coli
Hereditary based cancer
