Cancer Flashcards
1
Q
Cancer def
A
- result of a mutation in genes that regulate mitosis
2
Q
Benign
A
- can grow large but at a very slow rate
- non cancerous due to adhesion molecules
- stick them together to a particular tissue
- can be surrounded by a capsule so they can be easily removed via surgery without breaking off and spreading
3
Q
Malignant tumours
A
- can grow large
- grow rapidly
0 cancerous - can become unspecialised again
- do not produce adhesive so metastasis occurs (breaking off and spreading)
- can grow projections, forms secondary tumours
4
Q
proto-oncogene
A
normal/unmutated genes that code for proteins and regulaate4 cell growth and differentiation
5
Q
oncogne mutation
A
- permanently activated
- cells divide uncontrollably
6
Q
Tumour suppressor gene
A
- if mutated cell division could continue and mutated cells wouldn’t be identified and destroyed
6
Q
Increased oestrogen
A
- oestrogen produced in breast tissue after menopause
- interferes with transcription of cell cycle genes
- can lead to tumours
