3 steps before you can provide care
tell them who you are

- ask guardian if they person is a child, if child is alone assume you have permission.

can try to tell them why they need it but can never do by force if refused. You can also call EMS and remain at a distance on scene if they don’t want your help but still emergency
diff between first aiders, responders and paramedics
paramedics most qualified, then first responders (firefighters, trainers etc.), first aider is anybody
when unsure to make call to EMS, what do?

Breathing - listen or feel for breathing
Circulation - blood
primary assessment (tap shoulders, hello, hello)

Breathing - look, listen and feel (then watch chest for raising and see for breathing (5-10 seconds))
Circulation - look head to toe for bleeding
what do you do if there is an unresponsive person and you don’t have bystanders or a phone
get to phone quickly and call for help, then hang up and get back to person
when do you care before calling?
when somebody is in immediate danger and could die before EMS arrives:
- chocking
- life threatening external bleeding
- extreme allergic reaction
- child is unable to breathe (CPR first, call after 5 cycles because child’s O2 reserve not as big as adult
What are you allowed to do in regards to medication
help somebody find it and help them take it (hand it to them to take, show them where to inject), can’t make them take it unless it is a certain life threatening condition

what do for someone you suspect to be having a heart attack
medications to assist an adult who you suspect of having a heart attack
Call EMS immediately
aspirin - reduce damage during heart attack
nitroglycerine (spray is better?) - relieves pain
What does FAST help you determine
what do in this case
if somebody is having a stroke
Face - numb/weak in one side
Arm - numb/weak one side
Speech - abnormal
Time - call EMS immediate
have person sit and rest while EMS comes, note the time of incident
