Government
-organized system of decision making - can give a nation a sense of order and security
-makes laws and carries them out
-allows people to maintain sense of individual freedom
Monarchy
-one of the earliest types of government
-involves rule by one person (man) through divine right (God’s rule)
-power in this type of government is passed through heredity
Peace/Stability=
-high living standard (food, money, health, life expectancy, recreation)
The Constitution of Canada
-set of rules for levels of government to follow in decision making
-contains written and unwritten parts
-unwritten based on traditions from past
-mostly based on British pattern of parliamentary government
Constitutional Monarchy
-King or Queen of Canada - head of state
-Prime Minister - head of government
-Governor General represents Monarchy in Canada
-Sovereign appoints Governor General on Prime Minister’s advice (usually lasts for 5 years)

Federal government
-makes decisions related to matters of nationwide importance
-MPs debate and pass laws in House of Commons in Ottawa
-King is represented by Governor General
Provincial/Territorial Government
-elected representatives debate and pass laws at provincial or territorial legislature.
-King is represented by lieutenant governor in the ten provinces and by a territorial commissioner in the three territories.
Municipal/Local
-local governments are responsible for services that affect the daily lives of people
-size and structure of the council differs depending on the population it represents.
