Canadas Landscape Flashcards
Which Canadian landform region is the oldest?
Approx how old are the rocks in this region?
What type of rocks make up this region?
- Canadian Shield
- 3.5 billion yrs
- igneous and metamorphic
What are the characteristics of each type of rock . Give an example for each
Sedimentary- formed from particles of same pebbles and other materials: fairly soft, crumbly
Ex: limestone
Metamorphic- formed under surface of earth due to intense heat and pressure
Ex: gneiss
Igneous- formed when magma cools and hardens
Ex: granite
What kind of natural resources is the Canadian shield best known for ?
- Valuable metallic minerals
- Led gold nickel copper zinc
- storehouse of Canada’s metallic minerals
Describe the present day appearance of the Canadian Shield.
How did it evolve to it’s present day shape?
- Underlies most parts of Canada and two little parts of the USA
- was forced down melted, and rose back to the surface, cooled down over time
- as it cooled down, minerals were present
Name Canada’s lowland regions
Which one is the most populated? Which One Is the smallest?
Interior plains , Hudson Bay arctic lowlands , Great Lake st Lawrence Lowlands

- agricultural (grow a lot of wheat, beef, potash)
Name the two mountains in the east and west coast
Appalachians and western cordillera
How did they form? Between these two regions which one is older? How can u tell ?
Appalachians-layers of sedimentary rock were uplifted and folded at the end
Western cordillera - the collision of the NA and the pacific plates
- Appalachians are older
- know this bc they r 300 million yrs old
- they had more time to wear down
- eroded
Why haven’t we not taken advantage of the innuitian mountains?
Too cold
How many periods of glacial ice have occluded in Canada ?
When did the last period begin and end?
- 4
