CAN Flashcards
What is a companion animal
Species with a special relationship with animals
Oxytocin
Bonding “loving” hormone, impacts the pet food/ companion animals
Five freedoms: meeting mental and physical needs
- Hunger and thirst
- Discomfort
- Pain, injury, or disease
- Express normal behavior
- Fear and distress
Why research your animals
Need to allow them to express their natural behaviors
New stone age
Animlas/ man cohabitate - work together
Ancient contract
During domestication. period. Giving animal food and shelter in trade for loyalty and protection and unconditional love
Origin of domestic dog
From extinxt wolves
Not a carnivore
Diet adapted from fat to starch
Pancreas produces amylase not the saliva
Neotony
Jouvenile features
Less fear and stress
Smaller brains
Cat domestication
Cats domesticated themselves
Six nutrients
Water, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals
Balanced diet
All nutrients in right balance
Energy is
The singe most important item
Energyy from 3 nutreints:
Fat, carbohydrates, protein
Only nutritional treatment for increased lifespan and the reduction of disease
A reduce energy intake - less calories
14 year life span in dogs
Ad libitum - first incidence of disease and death
Restricted calorie - last one to die
BCS
Tool to monitor animal health
1 = emaciated
High # = obese
Obesity
Excess calories, will give them phyical issues, metabolic disorders, dont die of obesity die of heart attack, cant breath
Hypertrophy
Increase in cell size
Hyperplasia
Increase in cell number
If you let animal get fat at weaning
Their cells go through hyperplasia, body wants more room for their fat that animal will fight obesity for life
What happens if you put a cat on a diet?
Cat will go into hepatic lipidosis, where the body breaks down that fat into ketones. Cat needs to go on diet ver y slower
Metabolism vs. water
Small animals can live longer without water but dogs will die first
Water
The most important nutrient
Water quality
If animal not eating/ doing well, check their water, lack of water will cause death
Cooling process for cats and dogs
Cats concentrate urine more than dogs
Both sweat thru their paws
Both pant
Cats lick bodies to cool themselves
Who does better with lack of water
Cat because of concentrated urine
Who does better with lack of food
Dog because cats will go into hepatic lipidosis
Animal protein
Acidic urine
Plant protein
Alkaline urine
Cats are obligated carnivores
With plant protein gets them in an insufficient ph and get FIC and cat develops stones
Starch
Broken down through salivary amylase, digestion through enzymes
Cellulose
Need microbes, fermentation through microbes
Zinc responsive dermatitis
Animal protein has zinc plant protein does not
Guinea pigs cant synthesize what vitamin?
Vitamin C
Two forms of vitamin D
D2 = plant form
D3 = animal form
Vitamin D function:
Absorb and deposit calcium
Vitmains
Limit shelf life of food
Unsaturated fats
Breaks down and goes rancid
Double bonds, liquid at room temp
Saturated fat
Animal protein, solid at room temp
Computer formulation
Least cost ration balancing
Anthropormorphism
Human traits to animals
By products
Have become demonized, agriculture by-products are a bug feed source for pets
Beef dog food
70 % protein
Beef dinner feast, entree, supper, stew
10%
Dog food with beef
3%
Beef flavored
Just enough so dog can taste it
First look at the list of ingredients
Is on as fed basis
AAFCO Sanctioned
That is nutritionally balanced
All proteins are not created equal
Egg and milk have all essential
Animal vs. plant sources
Egg - chicken - poultry meal - meat meal - meat & bone meal - poultry byproducts - soybean/ corn gluten meal
2 or 3 plant proteins
Then it meets requirments, 1 animal protein will do the same.
Calcium in pet food
Most are deficient because limestone tastes bad
New protein sources
Crickets, meal worms, black soldier fly larvae meal for adult dogs
Dilative cardiomyopathy
Taurine Deficiency - many dogs have developed this due grain free (legume deficiency) so supplement taurine
What nutrient does grain provide to a diet
Starch, carbohydrates
Raw diets
Biosecurity risk, alot of animals are compromised, avma concern about HACCP, handling foods. All poultry has salmonella
BARF
Bones and Raw Food or BIologically appropriate raw food
Pros of raw diet
Shinier coat, healthier skin, more digestible, higher energy levels
Cons of raw diets
Not often balanced, food borne pathogens, dangerous to young, geriatric humans/ animals, whole bone choking, very expensive
Skin microbiome and fresh diet
Microbiome diversity was higher after dogs were fed fresh diet compared to after kibble.
Greater microbiome diversity
Better immune, better health, enviroment plays a role
Grains to obligate carnivores
Alkaline urine, so add acidifiers to prevent FIC
Corn gluten meal acidifier
Sulfur
Homemade diets / fresh pets
Many are defeicient, many get recalled, add kibble/ nutrient supplement
How to select pet food
In first two ingredients. Make sure it is a meat meal. And mic products is best approach to avoid GI problems
Digest - flavor enhancing
Animal digest refers to a animal protein that has been digested using enzymes, spray it on kibble to make it taste like meat. May be eating corn but it tastes like meat.
Supplements
So not need if feeding a balanced kibble
Cats need protein for:
Energy and gluconeogensis, if they dont get those amino acids they will metabolize their own tissues
Kittens should not get acidifiers why?
Doesnt close cavities,
Little friskies - corn
Obese, diabeties, metabolic disorder increase, cats need animal protein
Cat list unique nutrient
Needs vitamin A and D because they cannot convert it
Arachidonic acid
B vitamins
TAURINE plus PVT TIM HALL - why urine smells so bad (sulfur in taurine)
Algae
Plant based diet for cat
Gold fish
Have thiaminase
Invertbrates and calcium
Do not have enough calcium, so have an inverse Ca:P
reptiles and enviroment
Reptiles are able to metabolize due to their enviroment.
Adult frogs
Carnivores
Juvenile frogs
Herbivores
Dogs are:
Omnivores, faculatative carnivores
Parrot
Digestive omnivore like chickens
Coprophagy
Eating cectrophes or night feces to help them digest and absorb cellulose, vit k, vit b
Rabbit elizabeth collar
Will die because they cannot practice coprophagy
Rabbits with calcium and vit D
Animals can absorb calcium without vit d. They cannot absorb it all so they get stones
At maitnenance rabbits are fed
Grass-based pellets
Teeth car
Need something to chew on to shorten teeth
Clean produce
Alleviate bacteria, herbicides, insecticides
Birds and reptiles
Require vit d and excrete uric acid. Need to have vit d3 they cannot use d2 (plant form ) q
Blocking B ultraviolet light
Blocks vitamin d3
Seeds and nuts have fat and produce the hormone:
Galanin- which makes fat addictive, natural endorphin
