Turn rotary motion into reciprocating motion

What is the purpose of a follower?
To follow the cam profile to produce reciprocating motion
Followers are meant to always be in contact with the cam. What is put in place in high speed systems to stop them losing contact?
Springs are added to the follower to ensure permanent contact with the cam
