Newspaper Campaign: Sarah’s Law

A

In 2000 Sarah Payne was abducted and murdered by Roy Whiting. Sarah’s parents started the campaign to allow the public access to police information on potential sex offenders in their neighbourhood to protect their children. After years of campaigning the Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme was introduced.

Individual Campaign: Ann Ming

A

The double jeopardy law prevented someone from being trailed twice despite there being new evidence. It started following the death of Anne Ming’s daughter Julie Hogg. the Criminal Justice Act 2003 brought about the desired outcome and resulted in the imprisonment of Billy Dunlop, Julie’s murderer.

Individual Campaign: Bobby Turnbull

A

In 2012 Bobby Turnbull’s sister mother and aunt were killed in their home by Micheal Atherton. Turnbull started the campaign to change gun laws and also sought to establish a hotline for people to report their concerns. After his petition get 20,000 signatures and lobbying of MPs, amendments to the firearms act 1968 came into effect, preventing any person who received a suspended sentence of three months or more from purchasing or possessing a firearm.

Pressure group campaign: British Lung Campaign

A

Aims to prevent lung disease by campaigning for positive changes in UK lung health. After securing 50,000 signatures on a petition in 2011 and conducting research that showed 430,000 children were exposed to second hand smoking in cars every week the Children and Families Act 2014 was introduced. This banned smoking in cars with children present in England and Wales.
