  1. inattention (significant difficulty in sustaining attention to tasks that don’t provide high level of stimulation)
  2. hyperactivity (excessive motor activity and difficulties remaining still)
  3. impulsivity (tendency to act in response to immediate stimuli without deliberation or consideration of risks)

what are the main management options for ADHD?

A

Mild-moderate: consider parenting and school interventions 1st

Severe (5+ yrs): METHYLPHENIDATE (Ritalin)

describe the MOA and main ADRs of methylphenidate

A

MOA: CNS stimulant - dopamine/NA reuptake inhibitor

ADRs:

  • nausea, abdo. pain, decrease appetite and weight
  • headache and somnolence
  • psychiatric Sx e.g. depression
  • tachycardia, arrythmias, cardiotoxicity
