CAM201: Mammalian Divind Reflex Flashcards
1
Q
What is the mammalian diving reflex and what triggers it?
A
The mammalian diving reflex optimises respiration and circulation to allow staying underwater for extended periods of time. It also makes adjustments that prevent damage during deep diving.
It is triggered by submerging the face in water <21 degrees. Water above this temperature will not trigger the diving reflex
The mammalian diving reflex is exhibited weakly in humans, but very strongly in aquatic animals such as seals.

Q
What is the mechanism of the diving reflex?
A
Facial contact with water nerves as it enhances PSNS activity, suppressing SNS activity.
