Calorimetry Flashcards
what is calorimetry?
the process of determining the energy content of chemicals
what are the two instruments?
solution calorimeter and bomb calorimeter
solution calorimeter
this deals with aqueous chemical reactions
bomb calorimeter
this is used to determine the enthalpy of fuels, solids, gases and food
what is the common setup?
device to record temp, stirred to ensure even distribution of energy within the calorimeter, reaction chamber where the reaction occurs
what needs to be done before a reaction can occur in the instrument?
a calibration factor needs to be calculated
what is the calibration factor?
the amount of energy needed to get the temperature to change by one degree
how is energy in joules calculated?
E = V x I x t
V= volts I = amps t = time in sec
how is Cf calculated?
energy (VIT, datebook, MCAT, thermochemical equation) / change in temp
energy change
Cf x temp change
enthalpy
energy change/amount
what are the steps of hess’s law?
- identify the position of reactants and products and consider stoich
- determine order of reactions. flip or change stoich
- cancel down or simplify
- solve for enthalpy
