calibration Flashcards
what is calibration?
is the process of evaluating and adjusting the precision and accuracy of measurement equipment
minimises any measurement uncertainty by ensuring the accuracy of test equipment
how to use measuring equipment accurately to reduce the impact of systematic errors?
systematic errors can be reduced by:
- comparing results to other results that have been obtained
- using different equipment or techniques
to reduce random errors, repeat the experiment
how do you calibrate a thermometre?
put the thermometer into ice water. make sure the sensing are is under water.
wait 30 secs or until the reading stays ready. the temp should be 32f (0 Celsius)
how do you calibrate a spring balance?
- hang the tube in the scale
- adjust the measuring line to zero by moving it around
- when it is around zero let it hang freely. move it around to see if it returns to the correct calibration point (0)
how do you calibrate a measuring cylinder?
- the proper volume reading is taken at the bottom of the U
- add the last few drops of water from an eyedropper to bring it to the desired mark
- record this volume reading. return the cylinder to the balance and record the new mass of the cylinder
how do you calibrate a PH metre?
- make sure the metre is set to Ph mode and adjust them temp to 25 Celsius
- place the electrode in sample to be tested
- allow the display to stabilise, the Ph of the solution appears in the display
- rinse the PH electrode and place it back in storage
how do you calibrate a timer?
you need a time interval or a frequency standard which is used as a measurement reference
how do you calibrate a syringe?
the syringe is filled with ultra pure water without air entrapment. A sufficient amount is needed to remove air bubbles. The flow to be calibrated is then programmed in the pump and the water is collected in a balance
how do you calibrate a pipette?
rinse the tip and push fully yo remove any remaining liquid. Aspirate the calibration volume without bubbles and dispense the liquid slowly. then record the weight on the balance
how do you calibrate a volumetric flask?
can be calibrated by weighing it empty and then weighing it filled fully with water
how do you calibrate a burette?
is carried out by measuring the mass of a known volume of water delivered by the burette. By knowing the temp and density of water, the true volume delivered by the burette can be calculated
