How do you mix the milk replacer ?
You use a clean bucket
Measure out the hot water to 40C
Add the milk powder
Whisk until no lumps are in the mixture
Wait for the milk to cool which clotting will start to form
Feed the calf the milk at 37C which you test with a therometer
Wash up all the equipment used after

What is dehydration, how do you test for it?
Lack of bodily fluids
To test, you pinch the skin above the eye or below the rib. If the skin goes back quickly, then the animal is hydrated, if the skin goes back slowly or stays in the peaked position then the calf is dehydrated
What causes dehyration ?
Scouring and other illnesses
Where’s the best place to purchase a calf ?
Directly from the farm. Less stressful and lower risk of disease as the animal isnt meeting any foreign animals at the market
What is a zoonotic disease ?
A zoonotic disease is a disease that can be spread between animals and humans. They can be caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi.
Examples are Orf, Ringworm, Cryptosporidia, E.coli
What is a withdrawal period?
The time required after administering a drug to a animal to ensure that drug residues in the marketable product (meat or milk) are below the maxium residue limit (MRL)
What must be done after administering medicenes ?
You need to record it in the medicene book ! It needs to include- - name of product - date of administration - quantity administered - withdrawal period -animals indentification
This is a legal requirement (Veterinary Medicenes Regulations 2013) and is also neede to Farm Assurance schemes and traceability
