Calculus - limits Flashcards
Which curve do you use for the following:
lim F(x)
x approaches -5-
use the curve from the left
which curve do you use for the following:
lim F(x)
X approaches -5+
use curve from the right
What is the general rule for limits
lim f(x) = a
x approaches -x-
lim f(x) = a
x approaches -x +
lim F(x) = a
These all must equal each other
if the limit of f(x) from either side does not match what do you have
limit does not exist
If f(x) is on a solid line or solid dot what do you have
the answer otherwise it is undefined
What are types of discontinuities
- hole
- jump
- asymptote
What type of discontinuity is a an asymptote
Infinite
(- infinity) (+ infinity)
What type of discontinuity is a hole
removable because we can change it to fill in the hole by redefining the function
What are the restrictions for the denominator
it cannot be zero
If you can factor out the denominator then what do you have
a hole
