Calculus 3 terms Flashcards
Coordinate Plane
xy, yz, xz planes; divide space into 8 octants
Vector
a quantity with both magnitude and direction
Scalar
a quantity with only magnitude
Position vector
Vector from origin to a point
Orthogonal
2 lines are perpendicular at their point of intersection
Magnitude
Length of a vector
Standard basis vectors
a 1 unit long vector that points directly in line with an axis
Unit vector
Vector with length 1
Skew lines
Lines that do not intersect and are not parallel
Normal vector
a vector which is perpendicular to the surface at a given point
Velocity
the derivative of the position with respect to time
Speed
the magnitude of the velocity
Acceleration
the change in velocity (Δv) over the change in time (Δt)
Tangential component
tangent to the curve and in the direction of increasing or decreasing velocity
Normal component
perpendicular to the curve
