Add up the total data elements/number of data elements
Mean
Arrange the numbers in order from least to greatest
Then you determine the number of data elements
Formula: N+1/2 – N being the number of data elements in the data set
EX: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

10/2 = 5 – fifth number in the list
Answer: 5
EX: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 8+1/2 9/2 = 4.5 Average the 4th and 5th number in the data set and divide by 2 Answer: 4.5
EX: 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17

Median
Arrange the numbers in order from least to greatest – don’t have to, but makes it easier
Count the number of times each number is present
Answer: Number that appears the most
Mode
Take all of the values and place them in order
Take your score/number of data elements x 100
EX: 80, 82, 85, 91, 92, 93, 95, 97, 98
5/9 x 100 = 55.5th or 56th
Percentiles
Number of inpatient deaths (including newborns)/Number of discharges (including newborn)
EX: 5 deaths/400 discharges = 1.25%
Death rate is 2 decimal places
Death rate is a percentage so x 100
Gross Death Rate
Formula: (Number of Inpatient deaths (Including Newborns) – deaths less than 48hrs since admission)/Number of discharges (Including Newborns) – deaths less than 48hrs since admission
EX: 8 death, 3 deaths within 48hrs, and 155 discharges
8-3/155-3 = 5/152 = 3.29%
X 100 to get a percentage and convert it into 2 decimal places
Net Death Rate
Number of patients with a specific illness who expire/total number of patients with the specific illnesses
EX: COVID 18 covid deaths/246 patients discharged-covid = 7.32%
X 100 to get a percentage. Round up to two decimals
Case Fatality Rate
Number of deaths caused by anesthetic agents/Number of anesthetic agents administered
EX: 2 deaths due to anesthetic/1468 agents administered
2/1468 = 0.136% or 0.14% rounded to two decimal places

Anesthesia Death Rate
Formula: Number of deaths within 10 days of the surgical procedure/Number of patients who were operated on
EX: 1/8 = 0.125 = 12.5
X 100 to get a percent and round up two decimal points
Post-Operative Death Rate
Number of cancer deaths/Number of population at risk
EX: 596, 423/326, 148, 923 = 0.183%
X 100 to get percent and round up 2 decimals
Cancer Mortality Rate
Mean + Standard Deviation x whatever number
EX: Mean is 1
Standard Deviation is 1.5 x 1
Answer: 2.5
EX: Mean is 1
Standard Deviation is 1.5 x 2
Answer: 4
