Q

An electrochemical cell is formed by Ag and Cu electrodes. The standard electrode poterntial is 0.80 V for Ag and 0.34 V for Cu. The electrode reactions are Ag^+ + e- =Ag and Cu2+ + 2e- =Cu. Use Nernst equation to calculate the cell voltage, assuming the activities of Ag and Cu ions are 0.1. The activities of the solid Cu and Ag electrodes can always be treated as 1. Express your answer in unit of V.

Q

The ionic conductivity of a solid-state electrolyte in an SOFC satisfies the Arrhenius law, σ = σ0exp(-E/kBT). The figure on slide 23 of Chapter 4 shows the linear dependence of logσ and 1000/T, where σ is the ionic conductivity at the temperature T. Roughly calculate the activation energy of oxygen ion conduction in YSZ. Given that the two pairs of experimental data points directly read from the figure are (0.8, -1.1) and (1.0, -2.0). Express your answer in unit of eV.
