What is the preparation of Calcium Gluconate, and are there any special conditions?

A
  • 1g/2.2mmol in 10mL ampoule.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate and Calcium Gluconate precipitate when mixed; flush the line between administration of these medications.
  • Each vial must be visually examined prior to administration. It should not be used if precipitate is present or solution is not clear.
  • This injection is a supersaturated solution and may precipitate at low temperatures.

  • May increase myocardial and cerebral damage by increasing intracellular calcium levels
  • Tissue necrosis if extravasation from vein occurs
  • Dysrhythmias
