What is/are the indications for Calcium Gluconate?
A
- C9: Hyperkalaemia

What is the preparation of Calcium Gluconate, and are there any special conditions?
A
- 1g/2.2mmol in 10mL ampoule.
- Sodium Bicarbonate and Calcium Gluconate precipitate when mixed; flush the line between administration of these medications.
- Each vial must be visually examined prior to administration. It should not be used if precipitate is present or solution is not clear.
- This injection is a supersaturated solution and may precipitate at low temperatures.

A
1g (10mL) IV over 2 minutes, no repeat, max 1 dose.

What is the dose, repeat, and max of Calcium Gluconate for Patients aged <16yo?
A
20mg/kg (0.2mL/kg) IV/IO over 2 minutes, no repeat, max bolus 1g (10mL), 1 dose max.

What are the adverse effects of Calcium Gluconate?
A
- May increase myocardial and cerebral damage by increasing intracellular calcium levels
- Tissue necrosis if extravasation from vein occurs
- Dysrhythmias
