Calcium Flashcards
1
Q
Extraction of Calcium
A
Through Electrolytic reduction.
The cathode consist of an Iron rod while the anode is of graphite.
2
Q
Physical properties of Calcium
A
- Silvery-grey solid
- Malleable and ductile
- Good conductor of heat and electricity
- High Melting point of 851°C
3
Q
Chemical properties of Calcium
A
- Reaction with air: when calcium is heated in air, it burns with a brick-red flame to form calcium oxide.
- Reaction with non-metals: on heating it combines directly with non-metals.
- Reaction with water: it reacts slowly with cold water and rapidly with warm water to form calcium hydroxide and hydrogen
- Reacts vigorously with acids to displace hydrogen
4
Q
Test for calcium
A
Calcium compounds give an orange-red colour to a non-luminous flame.
If brick-red flame is viewed through a blue glass and the flame appears green, it shows calcium is present.
